On the eve of Will O’Burn’s first birthday, Willow Burn Hospice is proud to share a special preview from his brand-new illustrated picture book, due for release later this year.

The Will O’Burn illustrated picture book is a heartfelt story about a rabbit who hasn’t experienced grief himself but learns about it through his friends in the garden. As he visits them throughout the changing seasons, he discovers that each animal experiences and expresses grief in their own unique way. Through listening, kindness and gentle conversation, Will offers comfort and begins to understand the importance of talking about loved ones who have died. The story thoughtfully explores emotions and shows how remembering someone in a positive way can bring connection, warmth and hope.

We extend our sincere thanks to Helen and Victoria Downes for creating this beautiful and sensitive story, which opens the door to conversations that matter — without pressure, fear or overwhelm.

The book forms part of Compassionate Willow Burn, reflecting Willow Burn Hospice’s commitment to supporting our community to treasure lives, to live well and to die well. Willow Burn recognises the vital role of carers, friends, employers, colleagues, families and community organisations when someone is facing death or experiencing grief. By nurturing compassion and strengthening community resources across County Durham, the hospice works to ensure that nobody feels alone and that everyone has a meaningful connection.

The book is planned for release in late spring.
